Carlos is an accomplished multidisciplinary designer with experience in product, graphic, and fashion design and design education.
Carlos is inspired as a designer through active learning/creation. His personal research is oriented in Sustainability and Zero Waste design.
Carlos Villamil is a Colombian multidisciplinary designer based in Boston, MA since early 2006. In the late nineties he worked in Italy for the Europe Central Industrial Design Office of Whirlpool Appliances. After that, and for several years, Carlos acted as Design Director of HAUS jewels+objects, a company based in Bogotá, Colombia that he co-founded, and obtained several national and international design awards creating contemporary jewelry and home goods. About two years after he moved to the United States he started working in graphic design and marketing for the organic food company Whole Foods Market while studying Fashion Design at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
In 2011 he worked designing footwear and accessories for the fashion house Adolfo Domínguez in their HQ in Ourense, Spain. In 2013 he was selected to participate at The Launch, Boston Fashion Week’s platform for new designers. In 2014 his project Cytocouture, designed in collaboration with MIT PhD Laura Indolfi, was the winner of the 1st edition of Descience, a global competition that aims to bring science research closer to the public through fashion design. Between 2014 and 2016 he he worked for the footwear company élé INSIDERS. Carlos main interest is Zero Waste fashion and he is continually exploring this concept through experimental projects out of his studio while studying at Harvard University towards a Master in Sustainability and Environmental Management.
Besides Design, Carlos is also passionate for mentoring and has experience as college professor, teaching Design and Architecture History and Product Research at Jorge Tadeo Lozano University in Bogotá, Colombia. In Boston, he has worked with teenagers doing graphic and fashion design workshops in after school programs and at the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston as assistant in the Teen Arts Council. Currently he is an Assistant Professor at the Industrial Design Department at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
