ORIGIN & CONCEPT

Conceived by John Cira and DeAnna Pellecchia, STRETCH / HOOK was born out of an exciting day of play and experimentation inside Cira’s exhibit installed at the Hyannis Harbor Arts Center. After working with spandex installations for years in galleries and outdoor spaces, Cira was curious about having a dancer explore the hyper-kinetic nature of the installation as a living, breathing environment. On a hot day in early September 2012, during two-hours of improvisation, dancer / choreographer DeAnna Pellecchia unraveled, shredded and transformed Cira’s spandex installation, inspiring the idea to produce STRETCH / HOOK as a live performance event. After seeing video footage shot during this initial exploration, Kenny Werner, moved by the dynamics and beauty of the performance, and intrigued by the collaborative and improvisational nature of the project, signed on to write an original sound score and play live at the premiere which took place on May 28, 2016 at Cotuit Center for the Arts to sold out audiences and standing ovations. STRETCH / HOOK made its international debut in La Brousse, France at ZOU Arts Festival on September 21 & 22, 2018.
